What is EPR — Extended Producer Responsibility?

EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) is a mandatory environmental compliance framework in India requiring producers, importers, and brand owners (PIBOs) to take responsibility for end-of-life management of the products they introduce into the market. Under EPR, you must register on the CPCB portal, set annual collection and recycling targets, procure EPR certificates from CPCB-empanelled recyclers, and file compliance reports.

EPR applies to three categories in India — plastic packaging under Plastic Waste Management Rules 2022, electrical and electronic equipment under E-Waste Management Rules 2022, and batteries under Battery Waste Management Rules 2022. All three are administered by CPCB. Non-compliance can result in penalties under the Environment Protection Act and restrictions on imports or manufacturing.

Common Questions

Clear answers about how CargoMate handles epr registration and compliance services.

Answers reflect general practice. Contact CargoMate for guidance specific to your requirements.

EPR registration is mandatory for Producers (Indian manufacturers), Importers of covered products, and Brand Owners whose brand appears on plastic packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, or batteries sold in India. E-commerce sellers may also have EPR obligations.
Importing covered products without EPR registration violates CPCB rules. CPCB can notify customs to block import clearance, and the entity may face penalties under the Environment Protection Act including fines and direction to stop imports.
An EPR certificate is issued by a CPCB-empanelled recycler or collection agency confirming that a certain quantity of waste has been collected, processed, or channelised. Importers and producers procure these certificates equivalent to their annual EPR targets.
EPR registration certificates under Plastic and E-Waste EPR rules are typically valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Battery Waste EPR may have different periods. Renewal must be done before expiry to avoid gaps in compliance.
Yes. If your business involves products falling under multiple EPR categories — such as both electronics and plastic packaging — you can register for all applicable categories under the same entity on the CPCB EPR portal.
