What is BIS Certification and Why is it Mandatory?
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification is mandatory for importing or manufacturing certain notified product categories in India. Without a valid BIS certificate, these products cannot be imported, manufactured, or sold in the Indian market.
BIS administers two main certification schemes for manufactured goods: the ISI Mark Scheme for domestic Indian manufacturers, and the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) for overseas producers exporting notified products to India. Additionally, the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) applies to electronics and IT goods notified by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY). Both ISI Mark and FMCS require product testing at a BIS-accredited laboratory and a factory inspection.
